Hello Star*Fans-
NEW MOON
ALBENIB
NEW MOON (SOLAR ECLIPSE) CHART
UPCOMING TRAVEL
RECENT TRAVEL IN FLORIDA
NEW MOON
Well, the New Moon this month occurs at
8 degrees and 35 minutes of the sign Aries. It is exact at 5:15 AM EST,
4:15 AM CST, 3:15 AM MST and 2:15 AM PST, today, Wednesday, March 29th,
2006. If this is your birthday, or is within a couple of days of your
birthday, so will you be most impacted by the eclipse. If you have any
planets in your chart within a few degrees of eight and a half Aries,
you should think about what that vibration means in your life, what
house placement it is in, and what aspects it makes to other planets in
your natal chart, because heaven is now thinking about it too. The
alignment between the Sun and Moon is a little over a half degree from
Algenib, a star in the constellation Pagasus.
From Anne Wright's site, The Fixed Stars
( http://www.winshop.com.au/annew ), we learn:
Fixed star:
ALGENIB
Constellation:
Gamma Pegasus
Longitude 1900:
07ARI46
Longitude 2000:
09ARI09
Declination 1900:
+14.38'
Declination 2000:
+15.11'
Right ascension:
00h13m
Latitude:
+12.36'
Spectral class:
B2
Magnitude:
2.9
Suggested orb:
approximately one degree
Planetary nature:
Mar-Mer
The history of the
star: This
white star marks the extreme tip of the Horse's wing, so that its name
Algenib has been considered as derived from Al Janah, "the
Wing" of Pegasus,
but it probably is from Al-Janb (1),
"the Side" or "the Flank." According to the biblical writer Bullinger it
means "He who carries."
It has sometimes
been written Algemo.
Al Biruni quoted
it, with delta (now alpha Andromedae,
Alpheratz), as
Al Fargh al Thani, the Second, or Lower, Spout, i.e. of the Bucket.
This also is the title of the Arabic 25th manzil, Al Fargh al
Mu'hir, "the Rear Spout", or Al Fargu.
It lies at the
junction of the Hindu nakshatras Bhadrapada (25th) and Revati
(26th); and, with
Alpheratz, was
included in the corresponding lunar station of several other nations.
In the Hindu
lunar zodiac alpha Andromeda (Alpheratz),
alpha Pegasus (Markab),
beta Pegasus (Scheat),
and gamma Pegasus (this star Algenib), were "the Great Square of
Pegasus"; a large asterism that constituted the double Hindu
nakshatra (mansion of the Moon), - the 24th and 25th, -
Purva and Uttara Bhadrapadas, the Former and the Latter,
Beautiful, Auspicious, or Happy Feet, sometimes also called
Proshthapada, with various meanings; "Carp", "Ox"; "Footstool Feet,"
"Couch" or "Bed", "Bifaced Figure", or "Twins", "Stand" or "Support":
The regents of these nakshatras being Aja Ekapat, the "One-footed
Goat", and Ahi Budhya, the "Bottom Snake", "two mythical figures, of
obscure significance, from the Vedic Pantheon."
It was thought
that Alpha (Markab),
with gamma (this star Algenib) and zeta (Homam),
were the Euphratean asterism Lik-bar-ra, or Ur-bar-ra,
"the Hyena".
This star,
Algenib with alpha Andromedae,
Alpheratz and
beta Cassiopeiae (Caph)
makes up the Three Guides, marking the equinoctial colure, the
prime meridian of the heavens. (Allen).
Influence of
the constellation: The
constellation gives ambition, vanity, intuition, enthusiasm, caprice and
bad judgment. (Robson).
The constellation
portends events concerning ships and the ocean and also changes in the
weather. In medieval times it was said to indicate vain individuals with
a great deal of ambition, but with very poor judgment. (Noonan).
The Pegasus
Syndrome,
as exemplified in the legends of Perseus and Bellerophon, is concerned
with the innate ability possessed by some people to negotiate
difficulties by rising above them, on the one hand, and the danger of
overreaching themselves, on the other. Pegasus, by birth, is the child
of Medusa and Neptune, symbols of 'wisdom' and 'emotion,' respectively,
which shows the dichotomy of his nature. As in the story, Bellerophon
attempted to fly to Olympus (overreach his potential). He believed that
Pegasus was subject to his will. However, it was Pegasus who made it to
Olympus, while Bellerophon was tossed back to earth, lame and reproached
by others. It is unwise to take any situation for granted as the
'lesser' person (or, in this case, beast) may be the very one to teach
us the much needed lesson in humility. Pegasus is also indicative of a
specific mission in life which the inquirer will always find the time
and energy to pursue, although the path may be sewn with difficulties
(the Chimaera) and limitations (Bellerophon's doubt or arrogance). So,
the Pegasus Syndrome is the seeming ability to "fly over any situation,"
though the reverse may be a lesson in humility, being "taken down a
peg," as it were.
(Rich's Pegopedia
http://www.jps.net/xephyr/rich/fantasy/Pegopedia.html
).
General
influence of the star:
It gives notoriety, dishonor, violence, misfortune, and denotes the
naked and poor professional beggar. (Robson).
Penetrating mind
and a strong will, as well as determination. An impressive way of
speaking and a gift for oratory. In conjunction with the Sun, it will
make for a fighting spirit and a love of learning. Connected with
Mercury, Venus and Jupiter, one can count popularity and interest in art
and literature and distinction; if not further configurations also point
to similar gifts. With Saturn, in general, it is thought of as an
impeding factor, but has a name for good memory according to Morin. If
angular with Mercury and Uranus, Algenib will make for an inventive
spirit. (Ebertin).
Excess of heat
resulting in violence and perhaps misfortune or dishonor. (Noonan).
Rising:
Pegasus the winged Horse will appear and gallop aloft in the heavens. It
will bring forth people endowed with swiftness of movement and limbs
alert to perform every task. One man will cause his horse to wheel round
in caracoles, and proudly mounted on its back he will wage war from on
high, horseman and soldier in one. Another will possess the ability to
rob the racecourse of its true length such is his speed that he will
seem to dissemble the movement of his feet and make the ground vanish
before him. Who more swiftly could fly back from the ends of the earth
as messenger or with light foot to the earth's ends make his way? He
will also heal a horse's wounds with the sap of common plants, and will
know the herbs which bring aid to an animal's limbs and those which grow
for the use of man.
(Manilus, book 5 of
Astronomica, 1st century AD).
With Sun*:
Mental disturbances, fevers and ill health, some danger of accidents. (Robson).
A fighting spirit
and a love of learning. (Ebertin).
With Moon*:
Dishonor, loss by scandal, exiled or forced to flee, ill health, trouble
through writings. (Robson).
With Mercury:
Quick temper, mental disturbances, success in legal and other disputes.
(Robson).
With Venus:
Generous, proud, quick temper, bad morals, drink or evil habits,
favorable for financial affairs. (Robson).
With Mars:
Quick mind and body, lying or theft, danger of accidents. (Robson).
With Jupiter:
Hypocrisy, financial success, real or pretended religious enthusiasm.
(Robson).
With Saturn:
Many enemies, success, secret help from powerful friends and influential
relatives, bad morals. (Robson).
Good memory. (Ebertin).
With Uranus:
Active and eccentric mind, reformer or agitator, great influence over
the minds of others necessitating journeys, peculiar ideas in advance of
the time, mystic and fond of mysteries though frank and open, domestic
troubles especially in a woman's map. (Robson).
With Neptune:
Conceited, stubborn, deceptive, cowardly, vacillating, untruthful,
envious, superstitious, strong passions, sex troubles, evil
surroundings, many enemies, mechanical ability, criminal tendencies, may
be forger, sudden and violent death. (Robson).
(* The Sun and Moon
would, of course, be most impacted by the eclipse. -Ed)

NEW MOON (SOLAR
ECLIPSE) CHART
This month's New Moon chart is a powerful one, indeed. Not only is it a
solar eclipse and part of the eclipse cycle, but also, within two and a
half hours of this alignment, Pluto will be stationing and preparing to
go retrograde. The Io CartoGraphy map shows that Pluto will be on the
Midheaven running right through NYC and Montreal, and so let's keep an
eye on what transpires in those locations in the upcoming months. Solar
eclipses have an extended range of time under which they can operate.
(See map below.)

The tightest alignment to the eclipse is the sextile to Chiron in
Aquarius. We may be about to learn some news of situations which may
change our perspective. This could be brought through friends or
associates, about same, or be uncovered through electronic forms of
media, such as email or the internet. This basic theme is underscored by
the Mercury Uranus conjunction in Pisces. Previously unknown pieces of
information may now come to light, possibly through an accident,
breakage or an interruption of some sort. Like the lunar eclipse two
weeks ago under the Full Moon, the Solar Eclipse is a 'hic up' in the
energy, where normalcy is knocked out of whack; but Solar Eclipse tend
to have longer term consequences, run deeper and are more final than
their lunar sister. With Pluto taking a station and beginning its
retrograde motion at this same time as the eclipse, the powers are again
deepened, and there could be fanatical moves inspired by religious
ideals or moral aspirations (Pluto is in Sagittarius).

RECENT TRAVEL
IN FLORIDA
Neptune has been
crossing my Ascendant while on this trip through Florida, and was in
fact exact this past Sunday morning while giving a two day workshop on
mythology and the Bible (both Neptunian issues) for David Cochrane's
Avalon School of Astrology. The workshop ran from eight AM until
five PM on both Saturday and Sunday, and was absolutely incredible.
Together with the weekend before with the South Florida Astrological
Association, this has certainly been the most fulfilling and amazing
part of the trip so far. The evening before Orlando (OK, there were
three in a row) I had a flying dream where I was zooming up and down
over this well manicured grassy knoll, really enjoying the experience
and feeling that it was so easy, and that I had long known how to
do it. In the dream I was wondering as I was flying if people could see
my wings.
But aside from the wonderful connections
through the information which has been being shared have been the heart
openings I have been experiencing with people on the road. Eugene in
South Florida, my Uncle in Vero Beach, and even my folks, whom I have
not seen since last May, who came down to Florida for their time share
week in New Smyrna Beach. Eugene has just successfully recovered from
throat cancer after a three year struggle (with an amazing amount of
wisdom and help from Brenda Brush) and we instantly bonded together like
long lost souls.
Don and Eugene after the workshop- Kim
Mannie photo
My Uncle we spoke of in the last email. In addition to all the
stories of yesteryear, there was in immediate rapport, and after
visiting him in the hospital (another Neptune manifestation), I had him
playing on the piano twice in the short time I was there (he had played
once for fifteen minutes in the last year), and had Mom, who is in an
advanced stage of Alzheimer's, up and dancing with me to his tunes.
After returning from the South Florida group I entered his trailer to
find him taking a nap, and began to rub his back (he had told me to wake
him when I got there). Needless to say, he woke up with a grin from ear
to ear, as I'm sure no one has done that for him since Aunt Phyllis
passed away a few years ago. I gave both Mom and Dad a pedicure (Dad has
a hard time bending over to reach his toes), Mom a manicure, and Dad a
haircut!
The Neptune passing over my Ascendant
has manifested itself in various ways. In many respects I am out here on
my own, running from place to place and then moving on. This email, for
instance, was started in Gainesville and is now being finished in
Atlanta as I slowly begin to work my way north. The journey has provided
a platform with an incredible spiritual attunement, through daily
meditations, the sharing of various spiritual literary works, and in the
people I keep coming across, who, for one reason or another, have been
shut away from contact through disease, loss of partner, or simply age.
So many folks are so hungry to have some simple human loving contact
wherever I go. It is a bittersweet mix, as hearts open, and then must
move on.
It's an amazing weave, this thing called
creation; of love and sorrow, joy and sadness. There are few realms
outside of the Earth school, wherein such a wide spectrum is made
available on a single plain. Free Will enables us to choose where we
will fit within the pattern; but it means that those who watch over us
must maintain a hands off policy. David Cochran was relating to me an
experience that he had had during a meditation a few years back, wherein
he insistently inquired WHY there were some of the real travesties there
were here on the planet, and he labeled a few dark examples. As he tuned
into a specific hue of color in the meditation, it manifested as Mary,
and as his vision cleared he could see that she was crying for the very
same reasons that had moved him to seek some answers; and her response
was that the 'Boss' had a hands off policy, and that we here on the
Earth have more power to effect change than do those on the other side
of the veil.
This is quite a place we've got.
Ain't it a hoot?
Love and blessings to all,
~Don

ECLIPSE FULL MOON
FIXED STARS- CHARA
CHART OF THE
FULL MOON ECLIPSE
ON THE ROAD
UPCOMING
SCHEDULE
Well, this month the Full Moon occurs
at 24 degrees and 15 minutes of Virgo, is a lunar eclipse and is
exact at 6:35 PM EST, 5:35 PM CST, 4:35 PM MST, and 3:35 PM PST. The
Full Moon is in Virgo, while the Sun is in Pisces, and this polarity can
deal with many issues, among them working towards faith, cleanliness
being next to Godliness, humility through service, health, diet and
healing, and an incredible memory for dates, times, colors and specific
orientations. Job, personal well being and support issues (whether in
material or human support) are likely to present themselves, as the
eclipse adds a whole addition dimension to the interpretation which is
at work here. If you have anything at 23, 24 or 25 degrees of Virgo in
your chart, the planet or angle located at that position, it's house
position, and the house which it rules are all likely to be impacted by
this particular Moon over the course of either this day or throughout
the entire month.
FIXED
STARS- CHARA
This month with the Full Moon at 24
Virgo 15', our closest star is Chara from the constellation Canes
Venatici. From Anne Wright's sight, The Fixed Stars, we learn the
following about Cor Caroli: ( http://www.winshop.com.au/annew/ )
Fixed star:
COR CAROLI
Chara
Constellation:
Alpha Canes Venatici
Longitude 1900:
23VIR10.
Longitude 2000:
24VIR34.
Declination 1900:
+38.52'.
Declination 2000:
+38.19'.
Right ascension:
12h55m.
Latitude:
+40.07'.
Spectral class:
A0.
Magnitude:
2.9.
Suggested orb:
1 deg. approx.
Planetary nature:
Moo-Ven
History of the
star: A
double star, 2.9 and 5.7, flushed white and pale lilac.
The usual illustration of
the constellation,
Canes Venatici,
is of two Greyhounds held by a leash in the hand of Bootes, as he is
guiding the Bears (Ursa
Major and
Ursa Minor)
around the pole star,
Polaris.
The more northern
Hound is Asterion (as is the title of beta), Starry, from the
little stars marking the body and because it contains the M51 Whirlpool
Nebula: The southern hound; which contains this star and beta (Asterion),
the two brightest stars; is Chara, "Dear"; "dear to the heart of
her master".
This star marks Chara's
collar, but was set apart as the distinct figure; Cor Caroli, in
honor of Charles II in 1725 by the Royal Astronomer, Halley. This was
done at the suggestion of the court physician, Sir Charles Scarborough,
who said that it had shone with special brilliancy on the eve of the
king's return to London on the 29th of May, 1660. It has occasionally
been seen on maps as the centre of a Heart-shaped figure surmounted by a
crown. Cor Caroli, a modern Latin title, is the French Coeur de
Charles; the Italian Cuor di Carlo; and the German Herz
Carls.
With Ulug Beg it was
Al Kabd al Asad, the "Liver of the Lion", - here a technical term
indicating the highest position of any star within the compass of a
figure reckoned from the equator.
The Arabic Al
Karb al Ibl, the "Camel's Burden" figured here.
The German
astronomer, Bartschius, in the 17th century drew on his map of this part
of the sky the River Jordan, his Jordanis and Jordanus.
(Allen).
History of the
star: Star
on the collar of the southern greyhound or Hunting Dog, the one called
Chara, which means Dear to the heart of her master. This star stands
alone, marking Chara's collar; but was set apart in 1725 by Halley, when
Astronomer Royal, named this star in honor of Charles II. This was done
at the suggestion of the court physician, who said that it had shone
with special brilliancy on the eve of the King's return to London on the
29th of May, 1660 from exile to take his position as king of England. It
has occasionally been shown on maps as the center of a Heart shaped
figure surmounted by a crown. It is the French Coeur de Charles;
the Italian Cuor di Carlo; and the German Herz Kerls. With
Ulug Beg it was Al Kahd al Asad, the Liver of the Lion, - here a
technical term indicating the highest position of any star within the
compass of a figure reckoned from the equator.
Influence of
the constellation: This
constellation gives a love of hunting and a penetrating mind, making
those born under it faithful, keen, clever and fond of speculation. (Robson).

CHART
OF THE FULL MOON ECLIPSE
This Full Moon is part of a Mutable Grand Cross, if
one includes Pluto and the asteroid Juno as part of the configuration.
This is a particularly strong alignment, as
the orbs between each of the 'planets' are tight, the Sun and Moon exact
at 24 degrees and 15 minutes, Juno is at 24 degrees and 54 minutes of
Gemini, and Pluto at 26 degrees and 42 minutes of Sagittarius. All four
planets are within two and a half degrees, with three of them within two
thirds of a degree. Grand Crosses generally deal with a heightened
degrees of activity, wherein we are much busier and may have to gone to
marathon lengths (but do) to get things done. While the Grand Cross
makes great demands, it also supplies huge levels of energy. Mutable
Grand Crosses often deal with situations which are in a stage of flux.
It is a time of transition (underscored by the eclipse) wherein we are
bringing older cycles to a level of completion. With every point on the
mutable cross being triggered, this also intensifies who is being
triggered by this alignment. The focal point remains anyone having
planets at 24 degrees of Virgo (give or take two degrees, although most
traditional astrologers would bump that orb to five degrees, and there
is truth to this, but the tighter the orb, the more powerful the 'hit'),
but anyone with planets at 26 degrees of Sagittarius may also have some
roots being dug at deeply. Finally, because the Mutable Grand Cross
provides such high levels of concentrated energy, and because this is
part of an eclipse, there is some danger of a blow out at this time (or
through the month following this alignment), in travel conditions, our
rational, stratagems, health concerns or with work related issues (such
as health care or health insurance coverage, etc). Mercury continues to
be retrograde, which can always indicate mechanical faux pas of various
sorts, so this would be an excellent time to review or go over routine
engine maintenance issues and do the work ahead of time yourself, or by
a reputable mechanic. The point is to take control of issues in your
life, rather than having your life take control of the issues for you.
Of course getting a good hit on exactly what that is in YOUR chart is
the trick.
The Full Moon this month is having a specific effect on the US
national map, much in the same way that it would have an effect on your
chart if you have any planets in these positions. You can read about it
in this week's column by going to: http://www.athenasweb.com/2006/columns/Column031006.html
Don ON
THE ROAD
This month's Full Moon column is coming to you from
Vero Beach, Florida. In my own chart, this
Full Moon is conjuncting my Saturn, ruler of my 12th house, the position
of my father's 83 year old brother (3rd from the 10th, my paternal
uncle). I have been down here, visiting him in the hospital (knee
surgery one week ago Saturday), and recording many of the events of his
life on audio tape. These go back to when he was a little boy working in
a grocery store (it started out as a meat market in the days before
refrigeration when everything had to be kept cool by ice), and served
the 1000 islands region of New York from Clayton, where many of the blue
bloods of New York would come in the days before air conditioning at the
turn of the century and in the decades thereafter. The cooling breezes
of the summertime were highly sought, and an overnight train ride on the
sleeper would get you out of the city. He went on to enlist in the Navy
in the days after World War II, was roommates in the naval academy with
Gail's uncle (what are the chances of that?) and served as a part of a
hand picked, newly developed sonar crew (one of ten graduates out of a
class of 1400), saw a great deal of action, captured two of his own
Japanese prisoners (an anomaly for a Navy man who rarely see eye to eye
combat), and skippered his own ship; all by the age of 22. Although his
services were highly sought (he had an impressive array of training and
experience), he decommissioned his own ship, thereby putting himself out
of a job at the age of 23, and went on to become mayor of his home town
and continued with his impressive string of accomplishments and contacts
ever since. The Moon represents (among other things) the memory, and the
Full Moon is a wonderful time to look back over a long period of service
and the reflections of times gone by. I brought him back from the
hospital today and have been helping with his transition back to
'civilian' life. Conjuncting my Saturn is giving me a close up look at
some of the roots of my own family line, with eight generations of
family in the Clayton cemetery. In typical Saturnian fashion, I have not
had much interaction with this side of the family, seeing my uncle
perhaps three times in the last twenty years.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On Wednesday evening I will be speaking in Gainesville
to David Cochrane's group, on Thursday evening and all day Saturday to
Ft Lauderdale. One week later I'll be back in Gainesville doing a
weekend workshop on mythology and its influence on astrology, and then
on Atlanta on March 29th for a special invite to review the Book of
Revelation material again, April 1st will be doing an astronomy
presentation for Town Creek Indain Mound State Park in Gilead, NC. On
April 9th Lisa will join me in Knoxville for the week (her school
vacation), where I will present to the Eastern Tennessee Astrological
Association, and we will then make our way back to New England where I
should be through the month of May, making forays into Cape Cod, Rhode
Island, Connecticut, New York, and of course, Massachusetts to visit
with family. In June I expect to be heading back out to California to
rejoin Lisa and prepare for our wedding in August. If you are anywhere
along these lines of travel and would like to connect, let me know and
I'll see what I can do. The State Park presentation will be focusing on
some of the Native American component of archaeoastronomy, in an attempt
to uncover what may, or may not, have been known by those who took care
of the great land for so long.Stopped by
Keth & DrLight's after the Astrology Association of St Perersburg
Meeting along the Florida Gulf Coast.
Well, that's about it for this month. This has been an
incredible journey so far, with food poisoning, a five day fast,
incredibly successful planetarium show in Boulder and intense chart run
in Austin, together with an invitation back to Atlanta all part of the
show. Life is a journey, a trip, and an adventure, and it is wonderful
connecting and reconnecting with everyone, both old friends and new, on
this amazing voyage.
Blessings to you all, and may you dream your own Happy
Trails!

Can you comment on this? Thankyou,
Roderick and Judith Nailer
Dear Roderick and Judith,
(I'm sharing this with others on my email list as well because I
often get similar questions about the Mayan Calendar relation to the
Precessional Cycle of the Holy Cross from other people.)
I must first qualify that I have not researched the Mayan mathematics
significantly, nor is that my area of expertise, thus, I am not in an
authoritive position to offer specifics about it other than conceptual
thought, so please keep that in mind with my comments below; and sorting
out the facts from the new-age fabricated confusions about the calendar
which seem to abound and predictive dates spouted as fact is yet another
issue.
The 20:13 spacetime harmonic, the ratio of light and sound, is of
course significant (see math note below)--the 20 Mayan Glyphs (said to
relate to light) and the 13 Mayan Tones (said to relate to sound).
However, I think it is somewhat misleading to call the 20 Mayan glyphs
"sun signs"--I am not sure where that started--because it implies an
astrological association to many people that can create further
confusion.
As I briefly state in my material on the Erection of the Holy Cross
web page -
http://www.lunarplanner.com/HolyCross.html - I am not much for
focusing on predictive dates, and I feel that doing so is
diversionary from transcending our stretched-out space-in-time
perception when the purpose is to "arrive" at (return to) the zero point
of love, the power of the all encompassing present, Christ
Consciousness, galactic awareness, or what ever you want to call it.
Hence my offering the lunar planner as one tool to help us live in tune
to the natural cycles in present time--in the now--where our spiritual
growth occurs. The Mayan calendar, for many people, is most often
thought of as predictive, as if we are waiting on dates of significance
to occur, although it does not have to be used that way.
Their has always been tremendous controversy about the 2012-2013 dates
in academic circles since its introduction by Jose Arguelles; as well as
the many different possible interpretations of "the end of the Mayan
calendar / world."
I also think it is purely "academic" to predict a specific date based on
a calendar thousands of years old. The reason is because astronomical
cycles are NOT constants, they drift, oscillate, and change over long
periods of time. All man made calendars are continually adjusted to
match the ever-changing astronomical cycles as is our time-keeping
method in hours, minutes, and seconds. Earth's Precessional rate is NOT
a constant (260) figure as I explain here:
"Precessional Time is not a
Constant
To further compound the problem of zodiakal reckoning, we must recognize
that the rate of Earth's precession is not a constant. It is accurate to
say the last erect Holy Cross had occurred exactly 180° degrees ago in
the precessional cycle, but we can only estimate that to have been
11,000 to 13,000 years ago. The rate of precession may vary
significantly over long periods of time, or even oscillate around some
harmonic ideal. There are many continuously changing astronomical
factors that affect the rate of precession.
"The Great World Cycle," or "Earth's Great Year," as Earth's
precessional cycle is sometimes called, is estimated to be between
23,000 and 26,000 solar years--often rounded to the latter figure.
The 25,920 figure, often seen, is a natural harmonic ideal found in
quantum math. Another quantum number of significance is 22,680, quite
close to the 23,000 figure. These are all academic figures however:
Earth's current rate of precession is calculated to be 25,867 years.
This is about 1° every ~71.85 years, or 0° 00' 50.26" per year."
/smaller>/fontfamily>http://www.lunarplanner.com/siderealastrology.html
This 260 number is close to, but is NOT the harmonic of Earth's
precession. "If" the 260 harmonic figure used in Mayan calculations was
chosen as an "ideal" precessional harmonic, then incorporating this
harmonic when translating to modern day dates, again, is merely
academic, it is not accurately predictive. This may also allude to why
it is said (e.g John Major Jenkins, et. al.) that the Mayan calendar was
meant to end on a winter solstice. I suggest it is not the solstice that
is of importance, but the coincidence of when the solstice occurs on the
galactic equatorial axis (i.e. on the "Gate of God" of the fixed axis of
the Holy Cross), which is a function of Earth's precessional rate and
only occurs when the vernal axis is perpendicular to the galactic axis.
This is when the "erect holy cross occurs" in Earth's precessional Great
Year (see my HC web page and the Holy Cross movies). Was it this that
the Mayan Calendar was timing--the Holy Cross? Perhaps, I do not know.
Either way, Earth's precessional rate may have been different a few
thousand years ago when the Mayan calendar was created, thus only
approximating when this would occur. Was it even intended to be
predictive, defining a culminating day? And, in such large embracing
astronomical cycles, those that transcend Earth time (Earth's daily
rotation), such a "cosmic moment" may encompass many Earth years, not
merely express on one specific Earth day. I tend to think in terms of
being in this embracing moment NOW, as the Holy Cross geometry suggests.
Hence my placing importance of living in the now, as our spiritual /
evolutionary transition occurs moment-by-moment, it is not something we
are waiting for. The turning / return / retuning is at hand, occurring
in a larger moment; i.e., in God's time (just my opinion).
I thought the "Conversion Codex" is simply a translation of mayan days
to gregorian dates. If that is accurate or even possible I also do not
know. I thought the late Ian Lungold derived his work mostly from that
of Carl Johan Calleman in Sweden. You might wish to contact Carl (
http://www.calleman.com ) regarding your question as well. I am sure
Carl would have a far better understanding about Ian's codex conversion
than I. Carl also offers insightful articles about the Mayan Calendar as
well--and makes point about using it as a guide to participate in
present time.
*MATH NOTE:
Friend and colleague Barbara Mae Brunner pointed out to me that when
using n=20 and n=13 in the "generalized
formula"/color> (that she revealed and presented at the
2002 International Conference on Fibonacci Numbers and Their
Application) from which the Fibonacci Sequence and other related
sequences are composed, they yield harmonically tuned "whole number
sequences."
[√n + (√n-4)] / 2
(To derive phi, make n = 5 )/color>
Applying these further in her "ratio-based fabric" mathematical
technique yields some interesting results - for those wishing to explore
this further. Barbara's math work can be found here:

I also sent this to Carl if he wishes to comment.
Hope that helps some.
Nick.

Introduction
This is a busy newsletter
this month. The main theme of this edition of the V.A.N. is the
moon, for this is the year of the southern standstill. This is
an event where the moon seems to wander far from its normal path
and was once believed to be important to sky-gazers and ancient
astrologers alike. In this issue we explore this theme through
the pagan practise of classical Greece and their neo-pagan
reflections in current times. We also consider the astrological
implications of being born when the moon is being "drawn down".
Additionally a new comet has
appeared amongst the stars of Capricorn and Sagittarius, so as
visual astrologers, we have suggested its possible meaning but
with the attitude of "wait and see".

To
Draw Down the Moon:
When the moon
reaches out...
Bernadette
Brady M.A.
From our solar calendar perspective we tend to
see the lunar calendar as irregular and unreliable. In fact it
is extremely regular, not by the seasons but rather by the
months.
In
a lunar calendar, the Moon’s phase will always be at the same
day of the calendar month with the new moon always occurring on
the 1st of the month, the full moon on the 14th, and so on. Additionally, the elevation of the moon's arc across the evening
sky as it travels from east to west will be the same for any
specific month. Thus if we lived by a lunar calendar and March
was the name of one of the lunar months then I would expect that
7th March every year would have a first quarter moon - seven
days after the new moon - and that this moon would rise to an
elevation during the night which would be different from all the
other months but the same for every March from one year
to the next.
So the lunar calendar drifts against the
seasons but is tightly focused on the visual appearance of the
moon. The Jewish and Islamic faiths still work with a lunar
calendar.

Expanding this pattern, we can see that
the full moons of the summer months, regardless of the
hemisphere, are lower in the night sky,
keeping closer to the horizon, than
the full moons of the winter months which reach a greater
elevation in the night sky. (See the
February, 2005 issue of the Visual Astrology Newsletter for
more details).
Therefore the lowest full moon of the year will be at the time
of the summer solstice and the highest full moon of the year
will be at the time of the winter solstice.
This is a pattern, a dance the moon produces that the lunar
calendar not only acknowledges
but also
brings into sharp focus for us.
This focus was important to the Assyrian
astrologer/priest of 650 B.C.E. who
noted that, when
the moon god Sin was traveling through the stars of Capricorn,
he would always be low in the sky. However, when Sin traveled
through the stars of Cancer, he could
gain great elevation, climbing to his
highest position in the night sky. (It is tempting to see this
as being linked to the astrological idea of rulership and
detriment of the moon but that idea
needs to wait for another newsletter).
Yet
the position of the moon in the sky has another rhythm which
mingles with its normal seasonal rhythm. There is a 18/19-year
cycle where the moon will be seen to be even lower in the sky,
closer to the horizon or far higher than its normal position. We
do not pay any attention to this in our modern astrology but the
Assyrians recorded the moon's movement every month, including
such odd positions in a particular month as these. Sometimes
this was considered fortunate; at other times it was a sign of
“wolves and lions ravishing the land.”
This potential of the moon to rise but keep close to the earth
was also mentioned by the Greek historian, Diodorus of Sicily
(80-20 BCE) in his Biblio Theca historica . About 50
B.C.E. he wrote of a circular temple on the island of
Hyperborean where “ the moon appeared to be close to the Earth
and that the gods visited the island every 19 years”

The
island in question is a somewhere near Greenland or the upper
parts of Scotland which many believe to be the circle of stones
at Callanish, UK, and which appears to have strong visual links
to this particular lunar cycle(Callanish shown image
right). Others consider that Diodorus was referring to
Stonehenge
(upper image).
By
this comment, Diodorus of Sicily is suggesting that the tendency
of the risen moon to stay close to the earth is a sign of the
gods touching the earth or visiting the earth. The Roman poet
Horace (Epode 17) also implies this when he quotes the witch
Canidia
who tells him that she can “Draw down the Moon”,
as does Guiley
(1989:107) who requotes the ancient Thessalian witch believed to
control the moon who said:
If I command the moon, it will come down; and if
I wish to withhold the day, the night will linger over my head;
and again, if I wish to embark on the sea, I need no ship, and
if I wish to fly through the air, I am free of my weight.

[Note:
For those readers who own Starlight,
(Keth has it and can do
StarLight and
other
Astrology Reports and Charts for you) create a chart for
the 12 June, 2006 for Callanish, UK, then look at the chart as a
sky map. Point south and run Starlight's animation
feature at steps of about 10 minutes at a time and you will be
able to watch the full moon roll along the horizon. Then change
the date to another year, say 1997, and look at the summer full
moon and its movement and you will see the difference in the
elevation of the moon.]
Furthermore,
the ceremony or ritual of the drawing down of the moon is not
lost in antiquity, for in recent times,
according to
Adler
(1986:19), neo-pagans have revived and
re-created the ceremony which,
she suggests,
is one of their most powerful rituals for bringing
the energy of the goddess down to earth and it should be
performed as near as possible to the time of the full moon. This
is a time, believed within neo-paganism, where the goddess,
symbolised by the moon, is reaching out and can be linked to the
person performing the ceremony.
Yet without detracting from this ceremony's
magic or power,
a simply piece of astronomy may well lie at the heart of this
ancient ritual, for at the time of
warm weather and clearer skies, the full moon does hang
lower in the sky and therefore one could well be led to believe
that the “witches” of
Thessaly out in the woods on a summer's night were actually
“drawing down the moon”.
The Drawing Down of the
Natal Moon.
As
astrologers we draw down the sky and make our maps but in our
horoscopes we do not ponder over the concerns of whether the
Moon is being “drawn down”. However,
by running a scan in Jigsaw, I
noted two people in my files who were
born when the moon was full and being “drawn down”.
The first example seems to reflect the very nature of those
ancient Thessalian witches and it is the dancer Isadora Duncan.
Born on 26th May,
1877, in San Francisco (some web sites
have this date a year and a day later),
she traveled to Europe in her early twenties,
seeking to promote her provocative but natural dance style which
totally rejected the rigid format of classical dancing. She was
a dancer best known as an advocate of natural rhythm. She became
an overnight sensation both in England and Europe where she
began to appear in private receptions, dressed scantily and
dancing in bare feet. Her life was short and tragic but
through her dancing she is remembered
as giving back to western culture a
more natural and primal form of dance. She was born on the day
of the “drawing down” of the Moon and one
could easily say that she was touched by this ancient lunar
rhythm.
The second example is the singer Cat
Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam. As
Cat Stevens, Yusuf was a singer and song writer from the
1960s and 1970s and he sold over 40
million albums. He was born on 21st
July, 1948, London, and was and indeed
still is, renowned for his spiritual orientation.
In the midst of a successful, high profile
career in the music industry,
he converted to Islam. As Cat Stevens
he wrote many famous songs but the one
that seems to become most significant,
given the knowledge of his natal moon
and its “drawn down” nature, is titled
“Moonshadow”. It is not hard to consider
this writer, singer and spiritual man also being touched by the
light of the moon.
On a Personal Level
As an astrologer, not many charts that
you will see will have
their natal moon being “drawn down” to
the earth but when it does, such a moon seems
to fill the person with the light of another world, the
light of another rhythm. So if you, or your
client, were born with a full moon in Capricorn, do just
have a look at the declination or celestial latitude of the moon.
If the moon is south of the
ecliptic, then it is being “drawn
down”. For a birth in the southern
hemisphere, if you
find the moon in Cancer north
of the ecliptic, then it is being
“drawn down” to earth.
I would love to hear
from anyone who has such a moon just to see if they, too, are
filled with a spiritual dance or rhythm.

The Major Lunar
Standstill for 2006 and
some special workshops
Irene Earis M.A.
This year the moon reaches its furthest extreme positions on the
horizon in what is known as its Major Standstill.
It
does not literally "stand still", however. In fact this is when
the moon's movements are at their most volatile and striking.
When it is at the start of Cancer, it rises and sets further
north than at any other time and therefore remains high in the
sky for a longer period of time. A fortnight later, as the Moon
enters Capricorn, it rises further south on the horizon than
even the sun at the winter solstice, travels a short distance
above the south horizon and sets within a few hours.
This spectacle is at its best when the moon is full in Capricorn
(sun therefore in Cancer) as the full moon will appear to hang
low in the night sky and only rise above the horizon for a short
time. The more north you are in latitude, the more remarkable
this effect. At northern latitudes, such as Scotland, UK, the
prehistoric site of Callanish on Lewis is famous for the
“southern moon skim” at this period.
Web Cam to Watch the
Moon at Callanish
To
capture the lunar standstill of 2006 a
web cam has been set up at Callanish and enhanced for night
viewing, so you can watch this magical time of the southern moon
skim from your computer.
The
key dates are: 22 March, 16 May, 12
June, 9 July and 29 September.

Special "Sky and
Landscape" courses in the UK
To
explain some of the astronomy and the fascination of prehistoric
people with the moon’s extremes, two identical workshops are
being held by Sky and Landscape. These are weekend
courses held in the west of Wales and will be based on the theme
of the Lunar Standstills (April 28–30 and May 26-28). Robin
Heath and Irene Earis will be your guides.

Isadora Duncan – Born with a
Witches'
Moon
A Case
Study
by
Darrelyn Gunzburg
26
May, 1877

San Francisco, USA
[1]
Isadora Duncan is known today as the mother of "modern dance”,
founding the "New System" of interpretive movement by blending
poetry, music and the rhythms of nature,
one of the
first to raise interpretive dance to the status of creative art.
Born to a poet father and a mother who taught her to
"listen to the music with your soul”,
Duncan was
inspired by watching the waves slap and ebb on the
beach and by the ideas of Francois
Delsarte
[2]
who recognized that natural movements were those that flowed
from the structure of the body and the pull of gravity. Perhaps
this insistence that the force of gravity must form part of the
dance was enhanced by the fact she was born
when the
Moon was full and being “drawn down”.
(Figure
right: Isadora Duncan 1919)
When stars touch the earth they are made more accessible. Could
it be the same with the moon? Could we suggest that at this
moment when the moon
is being drawn
down that
gravity
has temporally
won in this Moon-earth dance? Whether
or not this is so, it is worthwhile looking at
her Moon both
in the sky as well as the fixed stars which sit
underneath her
significant Moon, a Moon which the Greeks considered to be drawn
down by witches.

Her sky map (above) for the moment of her birth shows her full
moon, low to the horizon and sitting between the stars of
Scorpio and the beast of Lupus, the wolf who is being killed by
Centaurus, also known to astrologers as the centaur Chiron.
Beasts
in mythology are killed because they are feared. So one has to
ask: "Fear of what?"
The relationship between wolves
and people evolved in Ice Age Eurasia [3] about a hundred
thousand years ago. Survival threw them together in a way that
meant the wolf-human hunting relationship was governed by mutual
tolerance and respect. This relationship changed when humans
assumed a pastoral and agricultural life-style where growing
domesticated animals for food required control and ultimately
the elimination of predators such as the wolf. This was
embroidered onto the sky as the story of the Centaur killing the
predator Lupus. Was this the fault of the wolf or the lack of
recognition of what a change of lifestyle implied?
By analogy and application to
Duncan, we can hypothesize that she represented a raw wildness
in her dancing, dangerous in its implication for change, yet
ultimately proving that that which is to be feared brings great
blessings. This was unconsciously summed up by photographer Max
Eastman who is quoted as saying,
It was never easy to coax Isadora
Duncan into a photographer's studio.
Like a wild and wise animal, she fled from those who sought to
capture
the essence of her - which was motion - by making her stand
still.[4]
We
can gain further understanding by considering one of her lunar
parans:
Starlight says of Duncan’s
Moon
culminating when Scheat is
rising
Challenging social conventions;
free-thinking in the arts, cuisine and matters of care
Her
life as an individual was one that would not be chained to
convention. She was
constantly defying social taboos. She did not believe in
marriage –
a huge statement for
the
early 20th
century - and gave birth to two children from two different
fathers.
Inspired by her as a role model, many schools created the space
for dance to become part of the curriculum, beyond exercise, a
life-enhancing experience.
In conclusion
The full moon moving along the horizon is an awesome sight. Once
believed to be drawn down by performance in ancient ceremonies,
we can still see its expression in the charts of those who have
been born at such an auspicious moment in present time by how
they expressed it in their lives.
Duncan’s parents named her
Dora Angela. Dora is Greek in origin and means “gift”. Duncan
brought with her the gift of angels in the way that she danced
but perhaps the drawn down moon enhanced this gift and gave her
the concrete ability to express it more clearly and succinctly,
a true Thessalian witch bridging worlds to inspire and uplift
us.

(1) There
are two
dates
for Isadora's birth. The most astrologically accepted is from a
recently-recovered baptismal record which states this as being "
26 May 1877", Another cites "27 May, 1878". Interestingly these
two birth dates are a year and a day apart,
the traditional length
of a witches'
year.

Francois Delsarte
(1811-1871), was
a
student at the Paris Conservatory. Fuelled by a hunger for more
“realistic” acting, he began studying how humans actually moved,
behaved and responded to a multitude of circumstances
recognizing emergent expressive patterns which eventually became
the
Delsarte
System of Expression which flooded into all levels of the
culture.

Do Comets have a voice in Visual
Astrology?
Thanks to newsletter reader Yururu, from
Colombia, who emailed us asking about the relevance of the new
comet (Comet Pojmanski)
appearing amongst the stars
of Sagittarius and Capricorn. There is little that has yet been
translated in the Babylonian corpus concerning comets. The only
reference I could find was in Hunger (1992:194) and it is the
following:
[If] a comet [becomes visible in the path
of the stars of] Anu: [fall of Elam. Its} people
[......] will be confused [......] city with city
[......] brother will kill brother [......I the
king of Elam [......] his days are near (to their
end).
The path of Anu is the path of the ecliptical
stars and kingdom of Elam was a kingdom lying to the south -east
of Babylon. This type of prediction from the "Chaldeans" - the
name given to the astrologers from Babylon by the Greeks - is
probably the seed that gave birth to linking comets to negative
events, for any random event of the heavens was viewed as a mark
of change and change was to be feared.
But let us take a more post-modern approach
to this comet. Given that it is near Venus and in the stars of
Capricorn, are we looking at some type of event concerning an
elder or wise global female figure? This does not have to be a
negative event. However, this question really begs a larger
question: Are comets relevant to visual astrology? I honestly do
not know. What we do know is that we have an opportunity for
making observations; we must also resist the temptation to
generalise.
